Thread Vein Removal
There are a number of reasons why broken veins develop – at Laserway, we can help. This condition is also called broken veins, dilated capillaries, red veins or thread veins. Various treatments are available depending on the severity of the condition.
What causes Thread Veins?
The skin is a medium of temperature control, so when we are very hot the capillaries dilate to release heat & constrict to conserve heat, so when this process happens too often the elasticity in the capillary walls is lost resulting in dilated capillaries.
There are so many causes of broken veins eg circulatory disorders, blackhead removal around the nose area, diet, hormones, pregnancy, heredity, extremes of temperature, the clothes we wear, sporting activities, smoking and sunlight.
How does the laser work?
Precisely controlled strong pulses of filtered light are absorbed by the targeted blood vessel, heating it to a point where it is destroyed. Following treatment the vessels quickly clear and are re-absorbed by the body, leaving little or no trace of the original thread vein. The light impacts the vein without damaging the surrounding tissue which makes this a safe and effective procedure.
Am I a suitable candidate?
Leg veins are not normally treated with Superior IPL. The best response is seen with facial thread veins, spider naevi and rosacea. If there is any broken skin on the treatment areas, the procedure has to be delayed until the area has been completely healed. Also there should be no sun exposure on the area 30 days prior to treatment or for the duration of the treatment.
How is the treatment carried out?
You will be asked to put on goggles to protect your eyes. A layer of cold gel is applied to the area which helps guide the light into the skin. The light applicator is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated. The chilled gel is removed and the area cooled down and moisturised.
How does the treatment feel?
No anaesthesia is required and most patients describe the discomfort as moderate and acceptable. Sensations may vary but most describe it as a heat sensation.
Are there any side effects?
Redness and a warm sensation are normal after treatment. A cool pack may be applied to ease these symptoms. The vessels should fade quickly, and some disappear immediately.
How long does the treatment take?
Treatments typically take 20-30 mins depending on the type and size of the area.
How many treatments are needed?
Typically 1-3 treatments are needed for maximum results spaced approximately every 4 weeks.
